Why Deepfield® Connect - Asparagus Monitoring?

Asparagus grows best at 18 to 22°C. In a warmer environment the asparagus stalks get hollow and ridged and the spear heads open too early. Such asparagus is hard to sell. The losses can be as high as 30% of the total harvest.

In a colder environment asparagus grows slowly. The temperature in the mound can be controlled using a two-colored cover. If the black side of the cover is turned towards the sun the mound is heating up, with the white side up the mound is cooling down. But it is necessary to know the set point temperature in order to control it correctly. For this purpose a single measurement a day isn’t sufficient. Instead it is essential to know the average temperature, aggregated by several measurements taken intraday at the same spot. Every day. Now there is a solution for this purpose: Deepfield Connect® - Asparagus Monitoring.

Does it pay off for me?

The high positive correlation between temperature control of the asparagus mound and a high yield share of grade I asparagus was proved by a field trial realized by the “Verband süddeutscher Spargel- und Erdbeeranbauer e.V.” under the direction of Ludger Aldenhoff in 2003 [2]. The following rough amortization calculation is based on the results of this field trial.

How does Asparagus Monitoring work?

Deepfield Connect® - Asparagus Monitoring measures the ground temperature using a high precision temperature sensor, which is installed inside the mound, see picture 2. This sensor measures the temperature at different height levels: Directly below the cover as well as 5, 20 and 40 cm below it. The system records the temperatures and sends them to a BOSCH operated webserver. This server provides 24/4 access to the data through Smartphone and Tablet apps, enabling you to take the right decisions. Access to the data can also be shared with employees or consultants.

The temperature history can be viewed and studied. In addition a warning function is provided, which can trigger an alert if a user defined temperature threshold is violated. These thresholds can be set individually for all four measurement depths. Furthermore Deepfield Connect® - Asparagus Monitoring shows accumulated temperatures aiding the customer to estimate the best point in time for the harvest. Harvest should be carried out when the accumulated temperature measured 20 cm below the cover reaches about 500 °C (according to Joachim Ziegler, DLR Rheinpfalz).

For clarification of the above described functions some app screenshots with example data are provided.

Rental conditions

The service and therefore the data transmission is available from the 15th of February to the 30th of June of each year the contract is running. For Deepfield Connect® - Asparagus Monitoring services we guarantee a monthly mean availability of 95,0%. The regular daily maintenance periods between 12:00 am and 4:00 am UTC +1 are not considered in the calculation of the availability.

The customer is responsible for a functioning internet connection of the device he uses for viewing the sensor data.

Deepfield Connect - Asparagus Monitoring can only do spot measurements of the soil temperatures and has an assistance function only! Therefore the measured temperatures are only valid for the immediate surroundings of the sensor. The soil temperature values depend on soil composition, soil moisture, geographic alignment of the field, shadowing and other external factors. The interpretation of the measurement data as well as the implementation of appropriate counter-measures lies solely within the responsibility of the customer.

All hardware, including all sensors and the Deepfield Gateway remain property of Robert Bosch Start-up GmbH and have to be returned after the expiration or cancellation of the contract.

In case of hardware damage caused by the customer he will be charged for the replacement. For the replacement of the Deepfield Gateway the customer will be charged 610 € (shipping included). For the replacement of the asparagus sensor ST4 the customer will be charged 240 € (shipping included).

Here are some app screenshots with example data for clarification of the above described functions:


  • On the field overview view the temperature data of all installed sensors is provided at a glance. Furthermore the values at 6 p.m. or 24h averages can be displayed.

  • The detail view of one field shows the temperatures of the selected sensor. Furthermore the values at 6 p.m., 24h averages or a two day weather forecast can be displayed.

  • The history view presents all measurements for the last day, week or month.

  • The temperature sums view presents the accumulated temperatures of all sensors.

  • Temperature thresholds can be set for each installed sensor, enabling early alerts in case of temperatures exceeding limits.

  • The alarm overview view presents all user defined thresholds for the installed systems.

  • The battery status and cellular signal quality for all sensors can be observed in the field overview screen.

  • For better communication access to all measurement data can be shared using any of the installed communication apps on the smartphone or tablet. This way for example friends, colleagues, employees or consultants can access the data.


How can I get Asparagus Monitoring?

Deepfield Connect® - Asparagus Monitoring can be ordered on our webshop . Preorder now for the 2017 season.

The annual service charge for each Deepfield Connect® - Asparagus Monitoring unit is 319,- EUR plus VAT. Each unit consists of a Deepfield® Gateway, a Deepfield® ST4 sensor and the Deepfield® App.

Costs such as for cellular data, service charges for the app or replacement systems in case of malfunction are covered by the annual service charge. The battery of the unit is designed for six years of operation and is monitored by BOSCH Deepfield® Robotics. Once the battery is empty a new Deepfield® Gateway is shipped to you and you’re requested to send back the old one.

How can I install Asparagus Monitoring?

Deepfield Connect® - Asparagus Monitoring can be installed very easily by following these four steps:

1. Download and install the app
2. Activate the sensor systems within the app using the imprinted serial numbers
3. Connect the sensor cable with the gateway unit
4. Plunge the sensor rod centrally into the mound

After completing these steps the system is installed and activated and starts collecting data every hour. In order for this data to be transmitted Deepfield Connect® - Asparagus Monitoring requires a cellular data connection. That is a prerequisite for the usage of the system.
